173. top 5 favourite taiwan drama phrases!!!

after having more than 600 episodes of 意难忘, which my grandma say has over 800 episodes, i have decided to compile the top 5 favourite phrases of taiwan dramas.

lets start with the all time favourite...

1) at number one, with have 2 tiers.

(i) 大事化小, 小事化无
this is probably the most often used phrases of all time in taiwan drama. and i kept thinking they might as well summarise this into 大事化无.

big thing = small thing --> eqn 1
small thing = nothing --> eqn 2
sub eqn 1 into eqn 2:
big thing = nothing

(ii) 人不为己, 天诛地灭
yet another very frequently used phrase. this phrase is often used with what is supposed to be horrorific-sounding music. it is also used by a murderer after killing someone for benefits.


3) 色字头上一把刀
wow what a colorful phrase. the 巴 below the 刀 probably means the mouth area, which means it will chop your head off?

6) 败家子/不孝子
often followed by a slap or beating and will then be chased out of the house, but the 败家子/不孝子 will either kneel at the doorstep in the rain (always that coincidental) until his father/mother forgives him or he will go out and prove himself before his father forgives him.

5) 老天爷
mostly shouted after scolding a son for being 败家子/不孝子 or after someone in the family dies. it will be followed by either, if not all of the following:
(i) 你为什么要这样的折磨我！
(ii) 真是造孽啊!
(iii) 我上辈子到底做错了什么事, 你要这样的惩罚我


other common phrases
- 菜虫吃菜菜下死
- 妈!
- 自造孽不可活
- 平日不做亏心事, 夜半不怕鬼敲门
- 谢天谢地
- 神明保佑
- 活菩萨
- 仙人跳
